The Need

show or movie. The companion might provide some light housekeeping,
such as vacuuming and dishwashing.
The job stops short of providing medical care, dispensing medications, offering
physical therapy, bathing, or other jobs for which training or licensure is
required. In some localities, you may require a license or permit.
This sort of job requires a great deal of patience and understanding, and you
must have the ability to observe your older charges and to report on their condition
to their children or other relatives. In some circumstances, you may need to call
doctors or other medical professionals to report on new or ongoing conditions.
Know the Territory
There is a need for this sort of work just about everywhere, but the parents and
their children may be living in completely different areas.
How to Get Started
Spread the word about your availability in community centers, in senior centers,
in church newsletters, and in area newspapers and shopping guides. Seek to post
flyers and business cards at health care stores and pharmacies, including those
that sell and rent medical equipment for the home.
Contact area doctors and let them know of your services; they may be willing
to recommend you to their patients or their families.
Be prepared to give personal references.

How Much to Charge
Charge an hourly rate for your time. If the client lives some distance from your
home, you can charge a reasonable mileage rate for your drive.
With permission, you can purchase and bill for the cost of games, books,
CDs, and other things you feel are valuable for your client.
Some of these jobs are filled by agencies that specialize in services to the
elderly. You may be able to work for the agency and be paid by that group instead
of directly by the client.
