Planning and reading time

15 minutes reading and planning time is given in addition to 3 hours writing time. You can read, prioritize, annotate questions, during that time. Annotation will help you save time when writing answers to questions.

You can also perform primary calculations such as calculating contribution per unit, to use as an input to solving questions. It will save your time writing phase.

You should skim read all the requirements (not scenarios) across the question paper. Requirements that you cannot understand or prepared for should be eliminated. Answers based guesswork will not attract any marks.

Eliminate the marks of requirements that you obviously cannot answer. Divide the remaining marks by 150 (rather than 180) minutes to make allowance for time slippage. It will provide you the minutes available for each mark.

Reading the requirement you will have an idea of your ability to perform at each requirement. Skim read the scenarios of the each question.

Analyze requirements

Break complex requirements into separate parts. Look for the verbs in the question presence of more than one verb represent more than one requirement in given part of the question.

In addition, look for word AND. It is usually an indication of more than requirement.

Plan answer structure & key points

Plan the structure of your answer. Planning attracts no more on its own. However, it will eliminate duplication of key points across the answer booklet. For calculation based question, it will save time in labeling an item of expenditure again and again.

In addition, it will help you present you answer logically. It is particularly important for professional papers, where professional marks (up to 4) are awarded for format, tone of voice, structure etc of answer.

Clear communication

Present your answer in simple words and descriptive sentences. Use of technical jargons will not attract extra marks over and above simple wordings.

Keep your sentences short. Too long and complex sentences are difficult to understand. Examiner can only reward marks if they understand your writing.

Use separate paragraph for each key point. You should facilitate marker whenever possible. Lengthy paragraph requires more time and efforts in demarcation of key points on the part of marker.

Your workings should be thoroughly cross-referenced.

Attempt all questions that you can

Solve complete question paper. It is usually believed that marks at earlier stages of the answer are easy to obtain than marks at later stages in answering requirement.

Do not aim to produce perfect answer. It will consume disproportionate time and does not attract equal marks compared to marks that would be earn by moving to next question.

I recommend you to right the obvious points across the answer booklet for respective questions. If you have spare time at the end of the exam, then you can add further points to earn more marks.

Please do not scatter answers across the answer booklet. You should leave plenty of space for each requirement that you skipped and come back to answer these requirements rather than posting those requirements at the end of answer booklet.

Start each requirement for a question from new page.

Make sure your answer is properly cross-referenced to respective question number and it parts.

Make sure that you have tied answer booklets in case of more than one answer booklet is used.

Correct only original error. You do not need to change sub totals and total figures. You are expected to demonstrate your knowledge as an accountant rather than as mathematician.
